The Centre deals with normal students in regular classrooms who experience learning difficulties, regardless of their average lntelligence Quotients, that impede their academic achievement, due to causes intrinsic to the individual student. Students who suffer from such difficulties are characterized by one or more of the following:
Visual or auditory perceptual dysfunction, impulsive actions, memory disorder, distractibility, hyperactivity, emotional liability, language problems, poor eye-hand coordination and sometimes self-neurological signs.
These characteristics are identified and diagnosed by experienced professionals through comprehensive assessment procedures by applying formal and informal tools. Thereafter, intervention programs are applied using relevant teaching methods and learning strategies that would fit the student’s strengths and cope with their weaknesses. Hence, alleviating the students’ suffering ; improving their academic achievement; raising their self-esteem and reinforcing their social interaction. Ultimately, the aim of the educational process is to create an independent learner.
Speech therapy is now being offered at our section by language speech therapists to help our students overcome language and speech disorder such as stuttering that might hinder verbal communication.The remedial session aim at improving receptive and expressive language and also deal with aphasia.
This services is available for all students school-wide as soon as they are being evaluated. The section is in the process of preparing for services related to Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (S.S.S.) diagnosis and therapy effective from 2001/2002.
